Being proactive about inspecting your heavy equipment has many benefits. Maintenance issues are usually cheaper to fix if you catch them while they are still comparatively minor. Regular inspections also reduce your risk of suffering an accident. However, not everyone is familiar with the proper methods and procedures concerning heavy equipment inspection. That is why Bobcat of New Hampshire has created this guide to inspecting heavy equipment.

Refer to Your Owner's Manual

As always, your owner’s manual will be an invaluable source of information and manufacturer recommendations. If you have any questions about maintenance timelines or about which procedures will work best for your heavy equipment, the manual should have the answers.

Know the Daily Tasks

There are certain tasks that need to be performed daily in order to get a piece of equipment ready for safe operation. Make sure that whoever is assigned to operate your heavy equipment is familiar with these tasks and performs them daily. Ideally, all primary operators and supervisors should know about and follow these instructions.

Inspect for Safety

Modern pieces of heavy equipment come with many features meant to enhance safety, but none of these features can do their jobs if they are broken. Make sure that you are examining your brakes, coupling devices, seat belts, parking systems, safety devices, and steering mechanisms on a regular basis.

Inspect for Damage and Wear

Even the best heavy equipment can suffer damage or become worn down. Inspect your tires regularly to ensure that they are inflated to the correct air pressure and still have sufficient tread depth. You should also be on the lookout for any leaks or signs of structural damage. Heavy equipment needs fluids such as hydraulic oil, exhaust fluid, and coolant in order to function, so be sure that you are regularly topping off these liquids. Finally, lubricate your vehicle as needed and test that the lights are still functioning.
