Zero-turn mowers aren’t like your average riding mower or push model. These impressive machines are extremely efficient and agile, able to easily cut and swerve around objects with little to no effort from you as the rider.

However, because they’re so unique, selecting a zero-turn mower for your property can require a little more thought and planning than you may initially expect. To make sure you find the right model for the job, be sure to read our helpful buyer’s tips below.

Steering

When choosing a zero-turn mower, you may be surprised to find that these models offer a wide variety of different steering controls. While each option has its benefits, you’ll want to choose carefully to ensure your zero-turn mower is the best fit for your property.

If you’re looking for extreme precision, lap bar steering—which comes in both seated and standing options—is a great choice, as you’re able to change directions extremely fast. Joystick controls also allow for very quick changes in direction and are often a bit more responsive than lapbar models. You can also choose a simple steering wheel, which is much easier to learn to use while still allowing you to make quick precise cuts.

Property Size

The size of your property will have a lot of influence over the size of your new zero-turn mower. To keep mowing quick and efficient, it’s important to choose a mower with the right deck space for your acreage. On average, we recommend models with less than 42 inches of deck space for properties that are an acre or less in size. For 2 to 3 acres of land, we advise going with decks that are anywhere from 43 to 50 inches wide. If your property is 4 acres of land or more, your best choice is going to be a zero-turn mower with at least 50 inches of deck space or more.
